Just look at the companies that truly stands out when it comes to digitalisation:

  • Amazon, which was founded in 1994

  • eBay, which was founded in 1996

  • Google, which was founded in 1998.

Three companies using digital technologies to change a business model and provide new revenue and value-producing opportunities.

Which is exactly how Gartner defines digitalisation.

All three among the most digital businesses, if not the most digital businesses at that point in time.

All three founded in the 20th century, decades ago!

So, digitalisation is definitely not a new thing!

The second part of the digitalisation secret is that it’s really all about business development.

Focusing on how digital technology can be utilized to improve on your business operations and performance.

So …

It’s really not a question of starting doing something totally new.

It’s also not a question of whether to start doing digitalisation or not - or even how to do digitalisation.

It’s more a question of whether or not business development is an ongoing process in your company, and if it is, to what extent the use of digital technology is an active part of your business development process.

If you ask me, business development should be an ongoing process in all businesses - regardless of size, and the use of digital technology should most definitely be an integrated part of that process.

Because if it is … then this whole digitalisation thing will be so much easier!
